What causes nightmare?

I sometimes have nightmare. I have been trying to search what causes nightmare for a year because it's very interesting for me. And I found that anxiety and stress can both lead to have nightmare. Based on observation on myself (Lol), I had a nightmare whenever I felt stressed, worry, or angry with someone or something. I think theses symptoms cause nightmares.

Is is said that what you dream comes from what you think in the day and it is not finished yet.
So your brain will bring it back when you dream.
Maybe it's from what affect your feelings or something that you are afraid of.

I used to read a lot of books which are about psychology.
It support that what you think deep inside will turn out as a dream.
If you have no regret or any bad thoughts ,you would not have a nightmare.
